The Stage Give and Take.

Writer's picture: Iona KrugerIona Kruger

The idea that I can create something powerful enough to affect an audience is exciting. I am drawn to the vulnerability that I feel onstage. In these moments, I am responsible for challenging my listeners to face their own vulnerabilities. Live theater is an art form of the moment; the rough edges, slight imperfections, and proximity to the audience make for the possibility of deep communication between listener and performer. When I ask the audience to join in the emotions of an experience, we often feel the same sense of fulfillment. I am currently playing the mother in the cast of “What Comes Next?” an original musical written and directed by Jerome Walker, an alumnus of Yale 2019. This musical explores the interplay of love and loss. As a wife and mother with a traditional husband and a bisexual daughter, my character is challenged to keep the family peace while coping

with the death of her son. When I perform a role such as this one, I must not only express emotions I may not have experienced but communicate them to an audience. If I succeed, the listener will be moved to learn from my character’s experiences. I may even help an audience member cope with a loss of their own. Performance is not individual: it is the relationship between performer and audience that makes this art form most compelling.
